This is one of the most ancient subject forms- still life depictions go back beyond Babylonian times. Like many artists I find still life challenging and yet inspiring. It is not about simply replicating the way something- say a bowl and a jug on a table- actually look. It is trying to catch both their essence, the play of light across their surface and the ‘feel’ of their surroundings in one’s own style. I have also experimented with the Cubist idea of looking at objects and people from different points of view at the same time , layering images on top of each other to create a more complex image
